- Taking photographs of diamonds can be very tricky unless you have special equipment with proper zoom and lighting.

Nikon D50 is a great camera.
I enjoy Kodak/Panasonic.
Since you work with film and digital, you might actually want two cameras that can share lenses. I use a Nikon, so that’s what I will recommend. Most of the lenses made for film cameras will work on digital, but make sure any of the newer lenses will work with a full-frame camera, or they will vignette on the film camera.
You’ll probably have to go the used route for a film camera. Check Craigslist, ebay, former students, or pro camera stores that take used equipment in trade.
I love my Nikon D40, it’s perfect for amatures.
Check out bhphotovideo.com for lots of suggestions. They also have an excellent used camera department. I use a Nikon N80 film camera, with a 28-200 zoom. I also have a Nikon D60, with an 18-55 zoom. The lenses are interchangeable between the two, but the autofocus does not work with the 28-200 on the D60. Manual focus works just fine, though.
Cameras are like cars everyone has thier favorites. and depending on what you are looking for the one I love may not be the one that fits you. That being said as soon as you can afford it I would go for an SLR or a DSLR if you are going digital. These cameras will let you use the controls on them to learn photography and to decide how you want the picture to look. For both consider used as well as new, The big name photo stores all sell used equipment and you can get a good deal on it.So Check places like B&H, Adorama Buy good lenses, All things being equal this will make as much or more of an impact on your output as the body. I would recommend a D40 or D60 to start with if you are going Nikon check sites like Ken Rockwell and DPreview.com they can give you good comparisons
i own both a traditional Canon rebel K2 and a digital Sony dsc - h2. i would recomend these cameras to anyone looking to buy decent cameras for under $400.
