Is a career in photography practical?

I am going back to college and am thinking of taking a photography class. I am wondering if it is hard to get a job in photography. I am going to take the class to see if I like it, but I just don’t know about the career possibilities.

just like any other job, its very competitive. However, just so you know what your getting into, a semester of photography especially beginning can have you paying $2,500. That’s not including school fees that’s just supplies. Career possibilities for photography are:

    1. Commercial Photographer
    2. Fashion Photographer
    3. Sports Photographer
    4. Wedding Photographer
    5. Portrait Photographer
    6. Landscape Photographer
    7. Crime Scene Photographer
    8. Architecture Photography
    9. Magazine Photographer
    10. Children and Baby Photography
    11. Film Photography

These are just some of the few jobs that are offered in photography!

Yes, definitely. My parents told me it wasn’t practical.

Well, I ended up as a Graphic Designer in New York. THAT’S competitive.

Ya ever notice how many pictures are out there in general..online, ads, TV etc. etc. Someone’s got to take them.

    bad list:
    1. Commercial
    2. Fashion
    3. Sports
    4. Wedding
    5. Portrait
    6. Landscape
    7. Crime Scene
    8. Architecture
    9. Magazine
    10. Children and Baby
    11. Film Photography

That’s not a very good list.. When we talk about photography we mean PHOTOS, not film photography or who is in the photos but the purpose. (portrait, family photos, children go in the same area. Journalism [which was not mentioned] goes hand in hand with comercial, magazine, architecture - it’s the same area of work )

Best way to start is Wedding photography and Journalism - you only have to take good pictures - if you know your stuff it’s not hard at all - read a few online guides to photography and enter a few comunities of photographers for tips and help - and you don’t need any degree in order to take good shots. You need a dSLR and 1 or 2 lenses (you definetly need something wide and with a big aperture F2.8 or lower for Good wedding shots). From wedding photgraphy you can sustain yourself as in any job and you can buy gear in a few months of work. - you develop a website with an online portfolio where you post your best pics and you can demand higher fees.

You also need Photoshop and some experience in it - for fast learning search for online tutorials (or buy books). But most editing is very easy - for example retouching in portraits and stuff.

So… after wedding and journalism there’s landscape, architecture, magazines - they’re all in the same branch - you can get here trough journalism and artistic photography. Try to gather a portfolio of artistic images also.

You’ll find your way after you start making money from journalism and wedding - make contacts and friends in the business and you’re on your way.
