Photography magazines: how does American Photo compare to Shutterbug?
Justin H asked:
I subscribed to Shutterbug after a recommendation from someone, but I am largely disappointed. The mag is mostly advertisements and product reviews. I was hoping for something that was more about the actual art and process of photography.
Topher: Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out. One tip for you when posting links on Y!A is to make sure you leave a space on either end of the address. If you enclose the link in parentheses without leaving spaces, the closing parenthesis will become part of the link, making it invalid.

If your looking for a good American tutorial magazine for photo taking and photography in general compared to a camera rating and product magazine (like Shutterbug), I highly recommend Digital PhotoPro magazine ( ) [Corrected, thanks for pointing that out].
I can’t say good or bad about American Photo though. Just most of the good photography magazines are British and too expansive to subscribe in the US.
Well the good news is you can look at American Photographer on line and see if you like it better.
There are other excellent magazines you may want to view. The Rangefinder Magazine is written for pros (also available on line), however you may want to take a trip to Borders or B&N and look on their magazine racks for a magazine that is suitable for your specific needs.
All the mainstream photography magazines are nothing more than thick glossy product catalogs. They have been for decades.
American Photo is a little better but it still has a good number of ads…nothing like Shutterbug though.
I read the following Magazines:
Rangefinder
Black & White
Focus
View Camera Magazine
American Photo
American Photo has more fine-art related content than Shutterbug, but is slightly less instructional. Popular Photography has more instructional content than Shutterbug with how-to tutorials for both photography and image-editing. But also, since every magazine has a website these days, if you search through photo mag websites you’ll probably figure out which you’d prefer to subscribe to.
