They probably mean a film SLR, but you should check with the instructor. Only they can answer your question properly. Some courses are forgoing the film cameras and going straight to digital. It’s a shame really, film is such a nice medium.
I hope they do mean 35mm SLR, they probably do.. But as pointed out above many courses now are just teaching Digital. I do not think many courses will ‘require’ you to have any kind of SLR. They can be quite expensive and not everybody can afford them, I think they may be referring to a camera with manual settings. Basically a camera in which you can control the Aperture/Shutter Speed etc..
If however they mean a film SLR then there are plenty to choose from, look at something like the Canon A-1. Olympus OM-1 etc… They usually come with a 50mm f/1.8 and you will learn more about photography quicker on these than any DSLR.
.
Try Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera. It’s good for beginner, easy to use, compacted and light weight.
Nikon D40 hands down best beginner camera, its about $500 and its a investment you will be VERY happy with.
you can get it at best buy or staples.
