Is film photography in danger of extinction?
alactasic asked:
I’ve tried my hand at digital photography, even owned one camera - which ultimately died - but I still find that I like film cameras better for some subjects. Since there are less places where one can develop film, would there be a real danger of film photography ultimately going the way of the dodo?

for the time, 35 mm. still has a place in photography, and i believe it always will have some part, but it will decrease more and more in the next few years…..just look at ebay.com, 35 mm. film camera which would have cost hundreds pre 2000, now cost 1/5 or less than that.
so, no i dont think it will ever go extinct, but 35 mm. camera sales will do down a whole lot. mostly in point and shoot film cameras though, not as much (but still a lot) in 35mm. film SLR cameras for two reasons- 1. digital point and shoot cameras new go down to $80 or so and are very affordable. 2. most people who used point and shoot used point and shoot vs. film slr for convienance, and since digital is even more convenient, they will go up in sales as film point and shoot are almost dead right now.
As long as there’s people like yourself who still find enjoyment in the art of film photography, there will always be at least a niche producer of film. Film’s not going anywhere — it may be a bit harder to get your emulsion of choice, but there’re still plenty of photographers who still shoot medium and large format film exclusively.
Not yet… there’s still a lot of photographers who choose to shoot 4×5 or 120 film rather than digital… so, it’s gonna be a while before it goes away.
