Next year in high school im taking photography for one of my electives and I was wondering what is the best kind of camera to buy for photography..I don’t want anything to big bc I’m not that tall for my age(4 ft 5 and I’m 13) but I would like a camera I can use for all 4 years of high school and something very durable…thank you so much

It depends on your budget and the requirements of the class you will be taking. If you have to shoot film then just go with an old pentax K1000 with a 50mm lens or something similar (like a nikon fm2). If you can use a digital camera it will cost you more. The issue there is that most of the cheaper digital cameras have sensors that are smaller than a 35mm piece of film. I would recommend looking for a full frame camera on the used market. The canon 5D has just been updated with a mark 2 version, so the original is becoming a good buy. Again I recommend going with a fixed 50mm lens.
I have a Canon Power Shot SD450 Elph that I just love to use. Small and durable and takes nice pix. Simple to use and convenient to carry along, fits in my pants pocket with room to spare. I’ve had it for 3 years and it’s still clicking.
It’s been said X number of times before that it’s not the camera, it’s the photographer behind the lens. Learn to use what you can afford. Both film and digital photography are fun.
Good luck and happy shooting.

You should check with your school. Many school still teach photography with FILM camera (I think it is a mistake). Which means you have to buy or borrow a film camera.
But whether you buy film or digital, you want to learn a lot about photography you need a SLR type (not the point and shoot).
Canon vs. Nikon - in my book they are the same, especially if you are a bginnner. If your father or mother had canon (or Nikon) and like it, then stick with that.

The Nikon D40 is very light (for a DSLR) - and considered small.
Good luck…
you’re doing photography, yet you haven’t got a clue about cameras?
an old 35mm film camera
They’ll likely make you use a mechanical film camera which is a GOOD thing as it teaches you exposure without having to rely on a computer.
Despite the fact that you have to buy film, you are going to pay $50$100 for the camera and the lens versus having to pay $500+ for a DSLR. $400 buys a lot of film.
The three top least expensive
